Murcia Tourist Information - Around Murcia - Lorca
Lorca
Lorca is so full of buildings in the baroque architecture that it was declared a Historic-Artistic site in 1964. There are several archeological sites here relating to its multi cultural past. Its magnificent cathedral is one of the most remarkable historical buildings in the region. Most of its ancient architecture is baroque. The city is full of structures like Columna Miliaria dating from Roman times, the Espolon Tower and the Alfonsina Tower, a Christian construction dating from after the Reconquest; the ´Porche de San Antonio´, the gate through the old wall that surrounded the city (in the 10th century), the numerous churches and convents dating from different periods and built in different styles (15th century to the 18th century), the baroque palaces and stately homes, such as the Guevara Palace.
Lorca is also famous for its Holy week processions. The processions in Lorca are unique for their atmosphere, a blend of gaiety and devotion. Roman soldiers and quadrigas take turns with baroque statues of saints and with amateurs playing Cleopatra, Nero, the devil and other biblical and historical characters riding floats inspired in ancient locations.
The city will assume a new identity and role as plans for a new university are underway.
There are also plans for an airport. |
