Murcia Tourist Information - Monuments in Murcia
“Murcia is the Cathedral, the Cathedral is Murcia; without one the other is impossibleâ€. Murcia for many is synonymous with its great cathedral. The cathedral of Santa Maria stands out in the landscape of the city. It is one of the most important heritages of the region and an architectural wonder. The construction of the cathedral began in the 13th century under the reign of Jaime II. The cathedral was completed only in the 18th century. Thus many architectural styles are evident in the construction of the cathedral. But the interior of the cathedral is essentially Baroque.
It has several grand doors: the main door: Puerta del Pedron, Portada de las Cadenas, Portada de los Apostles. It is made up of three naves with an apse and twenty-three chapels.Inside, the splendid chapels of Los Velez and los Junterones and the chapel of the Immaculate will delight you with their grand design and brilliance. Its bell tower is more than 90 meters high with a total of 25 bells. You can enjoy a spectacular view of the city from the top of the tower. In a niche of the cathedral, there is a stone catalogue about the history and art of Murcia

Rising up right next to the cathedral, this palace is equally imposing. It was built for the Bishop Mateo. The so called Martillo (hammer) of the palace : a part of the building which towers above the rest, built before the construction of the main building had begun, to provide a viewpoint over the river Segura and el Paseo del Arenal, or Glorieta. The architecture of the building has roman and baroque influences with ornamental frescos on the walls. Inside, the imperial staircase is of great interest and it follows the most characteristic ideas of the Roman Baroque style. It consists of the patio, organised in three Dorian arcades and an upper, more compact part and the small, circular bishop's chapel.

The style is eclectic, with decorative classical and modernist elements. The magnificent ball room is decorated with beautiful and valuable paintings. The library of the casino, its tea rooms are also famous with enormous windows looking out over the square. The gallery is an enormous covered alley which leads to the different parts of the casino. The patio and its various interior halls are also lavishly decorated with valuable and rich paintings, frescos and antique furniture. The Murcians are very proud of their casino- a grand structure with splendid artwork.
- The Castle of Monteagudo :
Situated on the top of a hill, this fortress has Moorish origins. Its impressive structure is remarkable well preserved. Huge underground reservoirs and storage rooms meant that troops could hold out longer in battle. There are also indications that it might have been a prison and a grain store at various times in history. Today, restoration and excavation works are being carried out here to delve deeper into its past. From the castle, you can take in the vast views of the valley below and the hills on the horizon. It is an ideal place to enjoy he view and to spend some time in solitude.
